The fit-out of ‘Barossa & Light Optometrists’ in Nuriootpa involved transforming an existing tenancy into a contemporary optometry practice that balances retail presentation with clinical efficiency.

Project Overview: A Retail and Medical Fit-Out Balance
An optometry practice presents a unique challenge. The front-of-house must operate as a retail environment, while the rear spaces must function as private, efficient consulting rooms.
This optometry fit-out required a clear distinction between these zones, while maintaining a cohesive visual language throughout the tenancy.
The outcome is a well-resolved space that enhances customer experience at the front and supports focused clinical work at the rear.
Reworking the Retail Experience
We configured the retail zone to improve visual clarity, merchandising flexibility, and overall presentation, while retaining the existing internal framework.
Gyprock backing was installed behind the new feature frame displays. These were constructed over the existing slat wall system and carefully confined within the existing framing to preserve alignment, proportions, and visual balance.
We integrated new power points to support illuminated display frames, allowing flexibility in product presentation while keeping services discreetly concealed. This ensured the retail space remained visually clean without compromising functionality.
Further, custom cabinetry was installed to support laboratory repair and dispensing functions. This allowed essential operational tasks to be carried out within the retail zone, without disrupting the customer-facing experience.
To reinforce a minimal, refined aesthetic, we installed floating shelves and mirrors in accordance with the design documentation. Painting and finishing works were completed throughout the retail area, unifying the space and delivering a refreshed, contemporary appearance.
Transformation of the Consulting Areas
The consulting spaces to the rear of the tenancy were carefully re-planned to improve privacy, circulation, and usability.
Custom joinery was installed with integrated plumbing provisions for sinks and refrigeration, supporting daily clinical operations while maintaining a streamlined, professional appearance.
New partition walls were constructed within the main consulting room. These incorporated a sliding door system designed to discreetly screen the shelving and storage area when required. The entry to the main consulting room was also carefully worked on to improve accessibility and ease of movement.
To increase the practice’s capacity, a new stud wall and entry door were constructed to create an additional consulting room. We also considered acoustic separation carefully to ensure patient privacy across both spaces.
Installing Reostat (dimmable) lighting throughout the consulting rooms allowed lighting levels to be adjusted to suit different operational requirements- from examinations to consultations.
Hybrid laminate flooring was installed in the rear consulting room, providing a durable, hygienic, and low-maintenance finish well suited to a clinical environment. Final painting and finishes were completed in the consulting areas, delivering a cohesive and professional outcome.
Build Approach & Coordination
Throughout the project, works were staged to integrate seamlessly with existing conditions. This approach allowed new elements to sit naturally within the tenancy, rather than appearing as surface-level additions.
Careful coordination across trades ensured:
